Top 5 Sporting Attractions in Wales
70Wales is a very interesting part of the United Kingdom. It is a country of its own, of course, where people even speak their own incredibly complicated language. Don’t worry, though, because every sign and piece of information in Welsh is also translated into the Queen’s English! Wales is incredibly popular for extreme sports enthusiasts, as well as those who enjoy less strenuous sports. Let’s review!
Walking and Hiking
If you like walking and hiking, Wales really is the place to go. You could walk up Snowdonia, for example, if you are pretty fit. Because it is such a beautiful area of the country, those who are less experienced in hiking and walking can also very much enjoy themselves on the numerous trails available. You could quite literally get lost in the landscape or in the pubs - many people go on walking holidays, walking from one inn to another.
Surfing
The west of Wales is on the coast hence, there are many water sports to be enjoyed. There is plenty of information to be found on surfing in Wales, from surfing schools to surfing groups. Do make sure you always check out the conditions before you set out. You may also want to invest in some surfing guides specific to the area you are considering. There are very few rules when it comes to surfing, but one code that all surfers stick by in Wales is to never drop in (steal somebody’s wave), unless it’s been organised as a multi drop in beforehand.
Mountain Biking
Mountain biking is another sport that is of course very popular in Wales. How could it not be in a country with so many hills and mountains and weather that is bad enough to always have some very muddy trails for you to race through? Some of the best trails include Cwm Carn, Coed Y Brenin, Coed Lladegla, Afan Forest Park, Gwydyr Forest and Nant yr Arian. There are some fantastic wild back country rides in the Black Mountains, for example, but you can also go free riding.
Downhill Cycling
Downhill cycling is pretty extreme when it comes to extreme sports. DH, as it’s also called, is generally only suitable for experienced riders. The best trail in Wales drops 250 metres through the hill of Cwmcarn. It is possible to pre book an uplift, but be aware that you can’t opt for a private uplift. The best DH track in the United Kingdom has to be the Y Mynydd track, with some very technical sections, an open section at the bottom, some amazing jumps and drops and one of the biggest berms you will ever come across. There is even a massive gap jump for the really seasoned riders.
Sporting Holidays in the UK
Both Wales and England are great holiday destinations for sports enthusiasts. Visit the Owner’s Direct website and check out the wide range of Wales holiday cottages and Yorkshire Dales cottages available for rent – there’s so many to choose from you’ll be spoilt for choice.
The Wales Rally GB
This rally takes place every year, even if it has to be indoors. If held indoors, it can be found at the Millennium Stadium. The World Rally Championship is a fantastic sporting event that can be enjoyed by adults and children of all ages. Whether you want to watch or take part, you know you’re going to love it!
These are but a few of the sports that you can take part in. Wales is simply a fantastic country that will have something to offer to everybody regardless of age or ability.
