By Laura Ginn

There is nothing like a day out in a theme park to get the kids to burn off some of that excess energy they always seem to have. Yet whether you are a fan of the adrenalin fuelled activities or not, they will always let you hold their coats and bags for them as they scream themselves silly being hurled around on a roller coaster. Different parks up and down the country offer different kinds of experiences so try and find one that offers something for everyone to enjoy, and let them hold your jacket once in a while.

Alton Towers

Billed as the UK’s favourite theme park, Alton Towers offers a mix of white knuckle rides and family activities, including a rise based upon Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The park is split into themed zones with rides in each area reflecting that theme, such as pirates or the gloomy wood for example. Here you will find many places to rest and eat, plus hotels so you can spend a few days fully exploring the park. This makes it a true family holiday destination and not just a location for a day out.

Thorpe Park

Thorpe Park is billed as the UK’s most thrilling theme park and offers a good selection of white knuckle rides, including Europe’s tallest and fastest ‘launched’ roller coaster. This is also home to the thrill ride based on the horror movie SAW, so it really is a park for those who like to be kept on the edge of their seats. Even though this is most definitely a white knuckle park it still offers the usual family themed areas and rides and activities for the younger members of the family.

Flamingo Land

Flamingo Land is unique in that it is very much a theme park, with all of the usual thrill rides and family activities, but is it is also a world class zoo and holiday park. Here a frantic morning on the rides can see lunch taken by Monkey Island or by the penguin habitat. It’s not a case of the park ending and the zoo starting either are there are rides and attractions placed around the animal enclosures, to ensure that the children have no opportunity to get bored.

Chessington World of Adventures

Claiming to be the ultimate family park, Chessington is very proud to state that at least 90% of their rides are suitable for those aged 12 and under, unlike some of the other parks where smaller children can be excluded by height or age restrictions. There is also a zoo and sea life centre here to enjoy - plenty to keep the whole family entertained.

Need Some Time to Relax?

If you plan on taking your kids to some of the theme parks listed in this article you might also want to book a week in some luxury accommodation so you can relax at the end of the day. The Owner’s Direct website has a selection ofCumbrian cottages andLake District cottages that are sure to be perfect.

Legoland Windsor

Legoland is one park that can certainly be enjoyed by the whole family. With white knuckle rides, family activities and a huge model world created entirely from Lego there is plenty to discover. As you walk around you can’t fail but be impressed by some of the Lego creations that you come across here.
